India : French warship to dock in city on Monday

By : TOI

Keep a lookout for the warships. After an amphibious warship of the US Navy visited Mumbai recently, a French command and supply warship ‘Var’ is expected on Monday.

During the visit of the US warship, navy personnel interacted with their naval officials in the city. Now, during the the week-long visit of ‘Var’, a part of strengthening of Indo-French naval ties, Indian and French officials will exchange views and discuss operational issues.

This will be the first visit of a French warship to Mumbai after the licensed building of the French Scorpene submarine started at Mazgaon Dock in December 2006. Prior to this, a number of French warships have visited Mumbai. Remarked an Indian naval official, “Mumbai is playing a pivotal role in increasing Indo-French naval ties.’’

Towards the end of 2006, former defence minister Pranab Mukherjee met French defence minister Michele Alliot Marie to boost bilateral defence co-operation between the two countries. The India-France defence MoU signed in 1982 and the Indo-French High Committee set up in 1998 are the main landmarks in Indo-French defence co-operation.
