The Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT) being developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) could replace the Kiran Mark-II jets of the Suryakirans, the aerobatic team of the Indian Air Force (IAF) that performed over Shanghumughom on Wednesday.

Suryakiran team leader Wing Commander Sandeep Bansal, told The Hindu that the Kiran MK-II jets inducted in the 1970s were still in excellent condition and could serve the team for another "eight to 10 years".

Army conducts large-scale war games in Rajasthan

The strike formations of the Army equipped with frontline T-90 main battle tanks, heavy artillery, helicopter gunships and infantry combat vehicles have commenced a 14-day wargame in the Thar desert, in which Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are also being used.

The wargames codenamed ASHWAMEDH are being held in a 130-km corridor between Suratgarh in Rajasthan and Bhatinda in Punjab and is the largest exercise to be conducted in the last two years.

The Army, which is facing a shortage of 11,238 officers, is turning to e-learning modules to “increase availability” of manpower.

The officers, who spend a lot of time studying various courses, will benefit from e-learning. At the ongoing Army Commanders’ Conference headed by General J J Singh, it was decided that e-learning facilities would be increased even at the unit-level.

Facing an acute shortage of scientists due to unattractive pay packages, the DRDO is seeking a four-fold increase in salaries for its entire staff, besides significant performance-based monetary incentives for scientists from the Sixth Pay Commission.  Indian Navy flotilla heads for naval exercise with Russia
Russia and India will conduct joint naval counter-terrorism exercises on April 24-26 in the Sea of Japan as part of the INDRA-2007 series, according to a press release from Russia's Pacific Fleet.

INDRA-2007 is part of a biennial joint exercise between the Russian and Indian navies aimed at fostering cooperative engagement in the fight against terrorism. This will be the third such exercise since 2003.
