India : India to further boost missile shooting power

After testing the Agni-III missile last week, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is now gearing up for the second test of its fledgling ballistic missile defence (BMD) system. DRDO officials said the BMD system test to be held in May-June will be that of an "endo-atmospheric interceptor missile" this time, on the lines of the US Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) system.

 BAE Systems gears up for combat jet orders from India, Japan
Global defence and aerospace major, BAE Systems, is gearing up to compete with other leading combat jet manufacturers in the world to secure orders from India and Japan that may eventually be worth up to $15 billion.

With both the Indian and Japanese Governments due to decide on replacements for their ageing fighter fleets, defence companies are accordingly positioning themselves to secure lucrative contracts.

BAE Systems has received a $26.5 million contract to convert 20 F-4 Phantom fighter jets to full-scale aerial targets for the U.S. Air Force.

The converted aircraft, designated QF-4s, provide the Air Force with full-size, remotely controlled aircraft that allow aircrews to train in highly realistic air combat maneuvering, including live weapons launch.

Europe : BAE Systems Fires First Round from NLOS Mortar Firing Platform

BAE Systems has successfully fired the first round from the Future Combat Systems (FCS) Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) Mortar Firing Platform.

The FCS program is managed for the U.S. Army by Boeing and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and consists of 14 systems and a network to tie all the sensors, manned and robotic platforms and weapons to soldiers.

Asia&pacific : German recce Tornados in Afghanistan ready for operations

The six German reconnaissance Tornados sent to Afghanistan to help NATO-led forces fighting the Taliban in the south of the country have completed preparations, a German military spokesman in Mazar-e Sharif in the north of the country said Saturday.
"The practice flights ended today," Hartmut Beilmann told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa from Camp Marmal.

India : ICBM with 5,500-km range can be developed in three years: DRDO

With the successful launch of the nuclear-capable Agni-III, India has achieved the capability to develop an inter-continental ballistic missile to strike at targets 5,500 km away within the next two to three years, top defence scientists said today.

"We have achieved the capability to make missiles with a range of 3,500 km to 5,500 km but the decision (to develop an ICBM) has to be taken by the political leadership," Defence Research and Development Organisation chief M Natarajan said here.

A notice was sent a week before Thursday's Agni-III missile test to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Jakarta and others in the region, informing them of the launch window dates, danger time, zone and height, India said on Friday.

The clarification comes in the wake of an explanation sought by Indonesia from Indian Ambassador Navrekha Sharma why adequate notice was not given about the missile test as two Garuda (national carrier) planes had to return to Jakarta after entering the Indian air space owing to the test-firing of the missile
