India : mobile radars, UAVs pressed to counter low-flying LTTE aircrafts

BY : ANI

After the three 'air-raids' carried out by rebel Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, India is trying its best to secure sensitive installations in Tamil Nadu and Kerala from such apprehended attacks, and in this regard have pressed more mobile radars, UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) into service.

The low flying lightweight aircrafts used by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have posed 'serious concerns' among the Indian defence forces since there are greater chances that the high-range RADARS used by military might fail to detect the intrusion.

Keeping this in mind, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is mobilising small mobile Russian made RADARS in and around all the strategic installations in the region, including the nuclear plant at Kalpakkam.

"All the vital and sensitive installations have been secured, " sources in the IAF said.

The Indian Navy will soon press two more UAVs in service to keep vigil in the coastal areas. One UAV has already been keeping an eye there.

Vice-Admiral Raman Prem Suthan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, told reporters that two more naval ships will now be patrolling the Palk Straits apprehending "spill over of ongoing skirmishes between the Sri Lankan Navy and the Sea Tigers of the LTTE into Indian waters".

With this the total number of naval ships patrolling the area would increase to four.

Apart from this, IAF will soon be deploying Aerostat Radars (ARs) along the Tamil Nadu coast and fresh order for four more ARs have been placed with Israel after the successful working of the two Israeli EL/M-2083 Aerostat RADARS which were purchased form Israel in 2004.

The present order is a follow-on order of the same deal.

The AR is balloon-borne radar system tied to the ground and is an early warning and control phased array radar, which is designed to detect hostile approaching aircraft from long ranges, especially when they approach at low altitudes.

These have a range of 500-kms and data gathered by the radar is transmitted to a central air defence command or control centre where it comprehensive air situation is monitored.

However, they are very vulnerable and could easily become intruding aircrafts target.

The Tamileelam Air Force (TAF), the air wing of the militant LTTE, has raided the mainland Sri Lanka thrice, the latest being on April 28 after it first carried out the air strike on March 26.
