India : IIT Kanpur developing robot for India's moon mission

When India sends its proposed moon mission in 2011, it will have a unique robot developed indigenously by student-engineers and their professors at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kanpur.

The 'SmartNav' robot being developed for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will help space scientists to navigate moon's surface during the manned moon mission and provide real-time data and pictures of the surface there.

India's very own Arjun tank is at a test track in Avadi near Chennai. After two decades of trials and controversy, its fate will be decided next month.

In a showdown in Rajasthan, a squadron of 14 Arjun tanks will face off against Russian T-72 and T-90s, the backbone of the army's strike corps.

India : Chile keen to buy HAL’s Dhruv helicopters

Next month, state owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will be submitting its response to Chile’s Request for Proposal (RFP) for the indigenously developed Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) ‘Dhruv’.

According to HAL officials, “We have received the request for proposal (RFP) from the Chilean Air Force for the 5.5 tonne, twin engined new generation helicopter which is currently in service in the country’s armed forces.”

The Sukhoi Su-30MKM are not replacements for the MiG aircraft but will complement the squadron in protecting Malaysian air space, said Malaysian Chief of Air Force Jen Datuk Seri Azizan Ariffin.

He said the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) would continue to deploy the MiG aircraft in its operations to protect the air space against external threat.

India : Army to go for fewer but fitter soldiers

The Indian Army is set to downsize - and become fighting fit in the process. It will reduce its strength by about 27,000 soldiers over a period of 18 months, retiring "low medical category" soldiers.

The last time such a cut in the strength was sought to be made was over seven years ago. Then, Chief of the Army Staff Gen. V.P. Malik announced a reduction of 50,000 personnel over a two-year period. The idea was to achieve that by not filling vacancies in the non-combatant arms. However, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the Kargil War ended the move.

The advanced jet trainers 'Hawk' from the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) would be delivered to the Indian Air Force in the first quarter of 2008, a top HAL official said.

'Hawk will be delivered in the first quarter of 2008, around March next year,' A K Saxena, Managing Director, HAL, told reporters here today on the sidelines of a All India Management Association-Madras Management Association Conference.

Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Chief Jen Datuk Seri Azizan Ariffin said the Sukhoi Su-30MKM multi-role fighter jet is a tactical and strategic asset to RMAF as its ability to cover long distances puts it on par with the air forces of neighbouring states.

"The Su-30MKM will act as a deterrent to parties that try to threaten the sovereignty of Malaysia," said Azizan when signing an early acceptance certificate for the delivery of two Su-30MKMs (M52-01 and M52-02) from representatives of Russian state corporation Rosoboronexport and the Irkut Aircraft Corporation here today.
