India's much-talked manned mission to the Moon has reportedly been shelved. The symbolism of India embarking on a new frontier has been given up for some practical concerns. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has categorically reiterated that there will be no manned mission to the Moon. It's learnt that the high cost of the project is the reason behind the rethink.
The Chairman ISRO, G Madhvan Nair, said:"'There is no plan to send man to the Moon at present. However, a space craft would be launched in September to study and collect data in the space around the Moon.''
Sources claim that high cost of the project has been a major deterrent since if a huge budget earmarked for this project, it might jeopardize other ongoing projects. Moreover, sending a man on the Moon will also require preliminary checks, which will take time and resources. Sources further claim that high cost on this project is not justified as the Moon's surface has already been thoroughly explored and a new breakthrough is not expected.
However, these kind of projects rank high on symbolism and emotions, especially for a nation, which has recently completed its 60 years of independence. A man on the Moon will be a big boost to India's indigenous space programme and will also propel India into the 'elite' league of countries that have managed to successfully commission such projects.
