India : Indian Air Force demands larger AWACS Platform

Indian Air Force demands larger AWACS Platform

It seems like another high profile project of DRDO is all set to hit road block ,as per news coming in IAF as demanded a larger platform like a Boeing or Airbus aircraft instead of planned and shortlisted smaller aircraft like Embraer and Gulf Stream planes,India's indigenously developed AWACS hit rough weather when a modified HS-748 Avro planes crashed just outside chennai in 1999 ,the project was revived only in 2004 ,The larger aircraft is needed because the Air Force has changed the radar requirements and other equipment, increasing the payload, a senior service official said. this new demand of IAF is not what Government had planned for when the the money was sanctioned for the project and now again government as to be asked for more money to accommodate new platforms , India in 2004 inked a $1.1 billion deal to have Israeli Phalcon radars mounted on three Russian-built Il-76 aircraft to be used as AWACS. The delivery of the aircraft will begin in mid-2007. It seems like IAF wants Phalcon type of aircraft when the urge for more this type of aircrafts is still questionable, this is another classic example of indian air force going for expensive foreign toys
