India : Indonesia mulls joint arms industry with India

Indonesia is actively considering setting up joint ventures with India to produce military equipment after defence officials of the two countries met here last week.

Indonesia is also seeking ways to procure tanks, ships and heavy ammunition from India and studying the possibility of using India's maintenance services for fighter jets it bought from Russia, reported English daily The Jakarta Post.

Qatar, India to sign defence agreement


QATAR and India are to sign a defence agreement “soon”, visiting defence secretary has said.
Shekhar Dutt, defence secretary with the government of India, told Gulf Times in an exclusive interview that both India and Qatar, which had long and friendly relations, would formalise their relations in the defence field with the agreement.
Already the two countries co-operated and collaborated in many ways, including training of personnel, joint exercises and service-to-service information sharing. With the signing of the agreement, “hopefully this year”, these relations will be institutionalised with annual programmes, said the official, who was appointed the defence secretary in July 2005.

The Indian Army will today induct the land version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force’s latest squadron got its first aircraft on Tuesday when two Sukhoi Su-30MKM Flanker fighter jets were delivered.

India's state-owned aviation major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has started work on building with composite materials an advanced attack helicopter that can operate in the Himalayan heights of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to HAL chairman and managing director Ashok Baweja, there were some good American, Russian and European helicopters available in the market but they were made of sheet metal and not designed to operate at heights over 8,000 metres.

The delegation of the Indian Air Force, led by Air Chief Marshal Fali Major, at the Paris Air Show is on the priority list of all international manufacturers of fighter aircraft since India is in the market for 126 fighter aircraft.

The order for the 126 fighter aircraft is among the largest Indian orders floated in recent times and has been delayed for several years. Defence minister A. K. Antony has said the tender document is on the final stages of preparation and the request for proposals (RFP) will be finalised early July.
