Army considering permanent commission to woman: Singh

Army Chief General J J Singh on Tuesday said Army is examining proposal to grant permanent commission to women in the Army and clarified that it treats its personnels with equality.

We are examining the proposal to grant permanent commission to the women in Army, Singh told reporters in a press conference responding to a question on the issue of a woman becoming the supreme commander of the armed forces.

The general arrived in Mhow near here to take part in the 29th biennial infantry commanders conference and later inaugurated the newly constructed shooting node of the Army's marksmanship unit (amu) built at RS 15.35 crore.

Referring to suicides by army personnels specially women officers due to stress and whether the service selection board (ssb) for armed forces is considering any change in its recruitment policy to meet the challenge, Singh said the selection process takes care of stress management and added, it always reviews and incorporates changes whenever needed.

However, he said for just one or two incidents the entire process cannot be termed as faulty and added, even the Army is taking care of them.

Besides, as compared to other countries, the stress level is very minimum in the Indian Army, he claimed.
