Two MI-8 helicopters of the Indian Air Force (IAF) rescued 18 crew members of an Iraqi tanker which ran aground in stormy conditions near the Kori Creek in the north-west region of Kutch district of Gujarat, defence sources said here on Wednesday.

The helicopters from the Jamnagar Air Base were pressed into service last afternoon after the Indian coast guard received a message about an Iraqi tanker 'MV Sea Glory' being stranded near the creek.

Indian Army to get 14 Arjun tanks for field trials



The Indian Army has agreed to take 14 indigenously developed main battle tanks (MBT) Arjun for field trials by Sep 30, it was announced Monday.

The decision was taken after successful demonstration of all modifications including medium fording or crossing a water body to Defence Minister A.K. Antony and other senior officials at Avadi in Tamil Nadu where the tank is being built, a defence ministry statement said.

Gripen offers tech transfer for combat aircraft




Even as the government is finalising ground rules for acquisition of 126 multi-role combat aircraft at a cost of $10 billion, Swedish company Gripen has indicated that it was willing to provide full transfer of technology and offer integration of its aircraft with all weapon systems available across the world. The move comes at a time when the government is expected to come out with a request for proposal (RFP) for the mega deal.

Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal F H Major on Monday said the government was "extremely" supportive of the IAF's modernisation plans "contrary to what is generally perceived."

The delays, he said, were mainly due to the plethora of vendors who have an eye on the Indian defence purchases and that all the equipment offered by these vendors were to be
thoroughly evaluated and the best supplier chosen "to suit our purposes."

Moscow denies supplying combat helicopters to Iraq


Russia has not supplied Iraq with Mi-17 Hip multi-purpose helicopters, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said Friday dismissing earlier media allegations.

Earlier this week Iraqi daily Al Mada reported that the Iraqi army had commissioned a batch of Russian helicopters, but did not specify the number.

It is looking for partners to establish joint ventures for both projects.
