$600-million chopper deal on hold, US objects to way its bid grounded by Army


Four months after the Ministry of Defence shortlisted Europe’s Eurocopter to supply 197 light helicopters to the Indian Army, the $600-million deal is now under scrutiny amid questions being raised by Washington over the disqualification of the only other contender, the US-based Bell. In May, Bell and US officials are said to have met Indian Ambassador in Washington Ronen Sen to express their reservations.

India has declared itself capable of launching a nuclear missile from a submarine and has announced that a submarine-based cruise missile Sagarika has been developed and tested successfully.

India : New missiles revealed

India today (July 7) announced the launch of two major missile programmes - the extended version of the intermediate range ballistic missile Agni III, successfully tested this year, and a strategic naval missile which is also capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

The Agni III was successfully launched this year and the new missile which may be called the Agni IV, will have a range of nearly 6,000 kilometres - enough to target India's major rivals. The missile should be ready in two years.

China is close to beginning construction of its first aircraft carrier to expand the operational and strategic capabilities of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), a Chinese news agency said Friday.

KANWA News cited sources in the Chinese defense industry as saying that several companies had received contracts on the development of systems and components for the future aircraft carrier.

India : Army's motorcycle expedition team returns from Siachen trip

Twelve motorcycle-born Indian Army personnel who undertook a high-altitude expedition of the Himalayas has returned here, after making a trip to Siachen Glacier, the world's highest battleground.

Major D. S. Patwal led the group, which included Army officials and young cadets from Indian Military Academy.

The USS Nimitz may have done duty in many of America's military campaigns, but the crew of the world's largest nuclear powered aircraft carrier are no match for the girls of chennai when it comes to football.

In a friendly match played in the city, the Nimitz team lost to a team of school girls on the ships' last day in Chennai.
