JF-17 aircraft better than existing F-16: Paf air chief


Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Tanvir M. Ahmed has said that JF-17 aircraft being manufactured in collaboration with China will be a sound fighter aircraft which in some respects is better than the existing F-16.

Talking to media at a book launching ceremony of ‘PAF Over The Years’, he said about 60 to 70 per cent manufacturing of the aircraft is being undertaken in Pakistan.

India : Army, PLA to hold joint exercises in China

The Indian Army would hold joint exercises with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) on Chinese soil for the first time in October-November this year, it was decided at a planning conference of both armies.

Army sources said the two-week exercises would be held in the Chengdu military region, which oversees border security with India among other countries, and about 60 Indian Army military personnel would take part.

India : Israeli Navy Chief to meet top Indian defence brass

Israeli Naval Chief Vice Admiral David Ben Bashat arrived here yesterday on a three-day official visit which signals further bolstering of already close defence ties between the two countries.

Though India and Israel have been exchanging scores of high-level armed forces commanders visits, these have been more focused on tours by ground forces, special forces and Air Force Commanders. Bashat is the first Israeli Naval Chief to visit India.

New S-400 air defence system to be put on duty


The S-400 Triumph air defence missile system will become operational in the town of Elektrostal outside Moscow on Monday. Taking part in the ritual of alerting the new air defence system will be Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Force Colonel-General Alexander Zelin and representatives of the personnel of the research and production association NPO Almaz, aide to the AF commander-in-chief Colonel Alexander Drobyshevsky told Itar-Tass.

India : Israeli Navy Chief on maiden visit

Signalling an impetus to defence ties with Israel, the Commander-in-Chief of Israeli Navy, Vice-Admiral David Ben Bashat, is on a maiden visit to India.

On Tuesday, Vice-Admiral Bashat will be briefed at the Indian Navy’s Maritime Operations Centre and he will also present his views on the maritime scenario in the region. He will call on Defence Secretary Vijay Singh and meet the three Service chiefs. He is expected to visit the Mumbai-based Western Command.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently signed the permission for the re-export of Russian engines RD-93 to Pakistan. RD-93 are installed on Chinese fighter jets JF-17 (also known as FC-1). India supplies more radars to Sri Lanka



After a gap of a year, India has sent more radars to Sri Lanka to help it ward off the threat of airborne attacks by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Defence Ministry sources said. India had resumed non-lethal military aid to Sri Lanka with the supply of two indigenous radars in 2005. This year in January it sent another military radar to Sri Lanka which was followed by the despatch of a similar radar in June.

Asia&pacific : Iraq air force wants Iran to give back its planes

Iraq's air force commander said on Sunday he hoped Iran would return some of the scores of Iraqi fighter plans that flew there ahead of the Gulf War in 1991, but conceded many of them were probably beyond repair.

Lieutenant-General Kamal al-Barzanji is eyeing the aircraft, which were flown to Iran to escape destruction, as he slowly rebuilds Iraq's shattered air force with American help.

India : Indo-Israeli military ties enter next stage

India's recent decision to develop jointly a new generation of surface-to-air missile with Israel is a quantum leap in the two countries' relations.

In early July, India's Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved the US$2.5 billion defense project with Israel. The development of missiles capable of intercepting aircraft and other aerial targets at a range of 70 kilometers to be undertaken by India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries.

India : BEL to export anti-infiltration radar to Indonesia

Striving for long to break into the lucrative arms export market, India has finally managed to get a toehold by bagging an order for sale of short-range battle field surveillance radar to Indonesia.

The sale order is eventful as the Indian company, which won the order, was in strong competition with some of the world's leading radar and electronic warfare equipment manufacturers like American Raytheon and European consortium Thales.
