Israeli Army and Indian army Testing Mahindra & Mahindra 'Axe'


Car maker Mahindra & Mahindra on Wednesday said it has invested $6-7 million in developing its new army off-roader 'Axe'. The company is looking to sell the vehicle to Indian and Israeli Army.

''The vehicle is being tested by the Israeli Army and would soon be tested by the Indian Army,'' M&M President (Automotive Sector), Mr Pawan Goenka, said on the sidelines of SIAM Annual Convention here.

India's navy is training Iranian sailors as part of a military program for around 500 foreign officers, a news report said Wednesday.

Observing that the Indian Army is the "most active" in Asia, a leading official Chinese newspaper has alleged that New Delhi makes use of an"invisible military budget" for key weapons acquisitions.

The top weaponry is purchased through "invisible military budget," the global times, a sister publication of the ruling communist party of China`s official mouthpiece, the `People`s Daily`, said in a special report on the Indian Armed Forces.

India : Top US admiral to visit India during wargame

Top US military official Vice Admiral William Douglas Crowder will visit Chennai and Port Blair during September 6-8, coinciding with the participation of the formation commanded by him in the biggest naval wargame hosted by India.

Crowder, who heads the US Seventh Fleet, will arrive in Chennai on September six, after which he will fly to Port Blair where he will stay till the completion of the Malabar Exercise in which warships from five countries India, Australia, Japan, Singapore and the US are participating, officials said.

Stung by criticism of its failures, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has hired the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) to showcase its contributions within and beyond the military sector.

Sources said DRDO had asked NCAER to evaluate its “net contribution to society, industry and the economy”, highlighting its net contribution to technological development, as also its commercial and economic gains. DRDO wants NCAER to conduct a “statistical, numerical and economic analysis” that focuses on the cascading effect of DRDO’s work in industry, and subsequently, the economy.

Its confidence further boosted after a successful satellite launch on Sunday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said is was targeting 5-10 per cent of the global satellite launch market.

"We can offer very competitive satellite launch rates, nearly 40 per cent cheaper than the prevailing rates. In the small satellite launch market our rates are lower by 20 per cent," ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair said.
