India : INSAT-4CR successfully placed in orbit

Overcoming technical snags, ISRO on Sunday successfully placed into orbit its latest communication satellite from the spaceport here, giving a major boost Direct-To-Home television services.

In a textbook launch, the rocket GSLV-F04 carrying INSAT-4CR satellite blasted off at 6:21 pm from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, two hours behind schedule after computers put off the launch following unsatisfactory performance of vent valve of the rocket.

The Indian Air Force’s planned purchase of 18 Spyder Low Level Quick Reaction Missiles (LLQRMs) from Israel’s Rafael Armament Development Authority may be in jeopardy.
Defence Ministry officials here have asked that the estimated $325 million procurement plan be reviewed by the Central Vigilance Commission, the government’s anti-corruption agency.
Ministry officials called this a routine step.
But other ministry sources said there had been complaints that defense agents

India : Indigenous Dhruv helicopter flies with advanced engine

The indigenously developed Dhruv advanced light helicopter (ALH) achieved a major milestone when it was flown for the first time with a new and more powerful engine that has been jointly developed by Indian and French engineers.

The 1,000-horsepower Shakti engine has been co-developed by Dhruv manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Turbomeca of France and will enable the helicopter to operate at high altitudes and in adverse desert conditions. The engine has an indigenous content of 20 percent and this is likely to gradually rise to 80 percent.

With just over a year left for India to get its first leased nuclear submarine from Russia, New Delhi last week quietly revived its dialogue with Moscow for a second Akula-class submarine.
While India has openly denied any interest in a nuclear submarine, talks on leasing the second submarine figured in a meeting on August 27 between National Security Advisor M K Narayanan and senior Russian officials including First Deputy Prime Minister of Sergei Ivanov, and Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov.

A400M reaches final assembly line

Europe's first production example of the Airbus Military A400M tactical transport has moved into final assembly, with delayed work on aircraft MSN 001 having commenced in late August.Pictured with its nose section and main fuselage barrel in jigs on EADS Casa's A400M final assembly line in Seville, Spain, the aircraft is the first of five which will be used to support flight test and certification activities from mid-2008.
