India: No political pressure on Bofors gun: army chief

The Indian Army said Wednesday that it was not under any kind of political pressure to reject the Bofors artillery gun as it seeks to order some 400 howitzers to shore up its depleting stocks of the weapons system.
'There is no political pressure of any kind. We have been given full freedom to recommend the gun of our choice,' Indian Army chief Gen. J.J. Singh told reporters here.
He was speaking on the sidelines of a function here at which Defence Minister A.K. Antony released a coffee table book on the Indian Army.

The Russian-Indian joint venture BrahMos will complete work on a new hypersonic missile in five to seven years' time, an Indian defense official said Monday.
The official said the missile, five times faster than the speed of sound, will be practically impossible to intercept, adding that countries were set to discuss the details of the project shortly.

The next variant of Agni having a range of 5,000 km will be inducted into the armed forces withing four years, a senior DRDO scientist said today. "The next variant will also be fully indigenous and will be able to strike at over 5000 km range besides carrying heavy payloads ... It would be a multiple warhead missile with a capacity to carry four to 12 warheads," Advanced System Laboratory Director Avinash Chander said here.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) will buy a large number of Eurocopter Fennec AS 550 C3 helicopters to replace its ageing fleet of Chetak and Cheetah helicopters.
This was indicated by Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major in an interview in New Delhi with India Strategic. He did not name the make of the helicopter, but as the Indian Army has already chosen the Eurocopter over Bell 407 this year it is apparently going to be the same machine for the IAF as well as the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.
India: India redesigns its north-eastern airfield for Russian fighters

India is upgrading its Tezpur airfield near the northeast border for deployment of multi-role Russian combat aircraft Su-30MKI, a Press Trust of India (PTI) report said Sunday.
This, it said, was the first time that India was deploying the twin-finned aircraft, capable of flying 3,500 km without refuel and 5,000 km with additional fuel, in its eastern military command.
The Su-30MKI is rated more advanced than the Su-30MK, with an aerodynamic configuration fit for an unstable longitudinal tri- plane.

The Indian Army will within months ask for bids to supply 56 Quick Re¬action Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) mo¬bile launcher systems worth more than $1.5 billion. The deal will include the licensed production in India of more than 4,000 missiles over 20 years. Defense ministry officials granted permission for the global tender in mid-September, after the state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said the Rafael Spyder surface-to-air missile does not meet the Army’s mobility requirements.
