Europe : Prince William to fly in RAF and NAVY

Prince William will next year fulfil his lifelong ambition to learn to fly when he joins the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.William will be the first modern Royal to serve in all three branches of the military in preparation for his role as King when he will become the head of the armed forces.

In learning to fly he is following in well trodden royal footsteps. The Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, and the Duke of York all qualified as pilots with the RAF.

Clarence House has announced that William, 25, will start a four month secondment with the RAF in January.

William, a second lieutenant in the Household Cavalry Regiment since completing his training at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst last December, will then spend the summer with the Royal Navy. He will work on submarines, surface ships and with the Fleet Air Arm.

When his secondment to the navy is completed, William will have a big decision to make about his future. He will have to decide whether to stay in the army or to pursue a career in civilian life. William will consult his father, the Queen, and Duke of Edinburgh to whom he is very close.

The announcement of his move to the RAF and Royal Navy has delighted the young prince who is second in line to the throne.

"His time with the RAF will... allow him to realise a lifetime ambition to learn to fly," a Clarence House spokesman has said. "He will be able to share the working lives of airmen and sailors."

William's temporary assignments follow a year of training as a specialist armoured reconnaissance troop leader in the Blues and Royals, where his younger brother Prince Harry, also serves.

The decision for William to spend time in the Royal Navy and the RAF is a reflection of the fact that, when he is King, he will be head of the Armed Forces.

The Clarence House spokesman added: "William has spent the last two years in Army. He would now like some familiarisation and understanding of both the RAF and the Royal Navy given the fact that one day he will be head of the Armed Forces."

Clarence House, which released photographs of William training at an Army base in Bovington, Dorset, said that he would be sent to a number of undisclosed military bases during his two secondments.

He joined the Army two years ago after taking a gap year from St Andrews University in Scotland where he graduated in geography.

In his first posting with the Blues and Royals, one of the two senior regiments that form the Household Cavalry which guards the Queen, he commanded a troop of four armoured reconnaissance vehicles, crewed by 12 men.

In learning to fly aircraft, William will be emulating his father's achievements more than 35 years ago. The Prince of Wales earned his "wings" in 1971, before going on to command a Royal Navy minesweeper, the HMS Bronington.

Prince Harry, who was also commissioned as an officer after training at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, was due to go to Iraq as a troop leader with the Blues and Royals Regiment.

But his deployment was cancelled because military commanders feared that the publicity would put the prince and his unit at a greater risk.

While he is in a military uniform William is guaranteed some privacy from the prying lenses of the paparazzi. Only last week Clarence House objected about the conduct of photographers as William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton left a London nightclub.

Following his forefathers

Edward VIII joined the Army in 1914, but he was not allowed to see active service in the First World War. However George VI, who became King when Edward abdicated in 1936, did serve in the Navy.

The Duke of Kent, the Queen's uncle, died in 1942 while on active service during the Second World War and Prince Philip had a distinguished career in the Navy during the war.

More recently Prince Andrew saw active service as a Sea King helicopter pilot during the Falklands conflict.

Corporations like Boeing, Raytheon, Halliburton, Lockheed Martin, Exxon, General Dynamics, General Electric really are great “tyrannical terrorists” who regularly destroy lives and livable ecology (as with global warming), undermine democracy, generate poverty and concentrate wealth and power at home and abroad.

This USINPAC seems to be a joke of an outfit. To use this disastrous one sided “landmark deal” as a benchmark to compare it with the pragmatic Jewish lobby is a terrible joke. So Sanjay Puri brags that we haven’t heard from Dan Burton lately due to USINPAC’s phenomenal lobbying. But of course the Dan Burtons and Edolphus Towns can take it easy if this is the kind of lobbying that USINPAC can pull off. Glancing at how those with a visceral hatred for India voted for the abominable Hyde Act, its interesting to see that while Burton and Cynthia McKinney refrained from voting, Towns actually voted for the deal!
