India : Navy team to discuss Gorshkov price hike with Russia

BY : Manu Pubby For The Indian Express Group

Days ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Russia, a top-level Indian Navy delegation is heading for Moscow to discuss the delay and price escalation in the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier deal — perhaps, the most thorny issue between the two countries. The first official hearing by India on the price escalation is scheduled to take place this week. A detailed financial and technical plan, outlining the specific areas where Russian shipbuilders feel costs need to be increased, will be presented to the Indian side for the first time. Moscow has made it clear that the cost of the

Su-30 upgrade restricts Indian air force fleet

Indian air force efforts to bring its fleet of around 70 Sukhoi Su-30 fighters to a common standard appears to have degraded the service's available number of aircraft to fewer than 50.

With its initial batch of 18 Su-30Ks having been retired after less than a decade of use, and licensed production of the Su-30MKI taking place at Hindustan Aeronautics' Nasik facility at a current rate of around 13 a year, standardisation work to around nine early Russian-built MKIs has restricted India's frontline fleet. The work includes

Red Arrows unveil new-look Aircraft ahead of Overseas Tour

The Red Arrows are set to unveil a new aircraft paint-scheme this week as they leave the UK on a six-week overseas tour. The change to the world-famous design is thought to be the first major permanent alteration since the Red Arrows took delivery of their Hawk aircraft in 1979. “The Red Arrows’ Hawk aircraft are known and loved by millions of people around the world.” said Wing Commander Jas Hawker, Red 1. “We needed to keep a careful balance between making our famous aircraft unrecognisable and reminding people that we are proud to represent the Royal Air Force. This is especially important when many Royal Air Force personnel are away

India : 7 defence deals being probed for kickbacks

BY : Srinand Jha For Hindustan Times

The Ministry of Defence is inquiring into allegations of kickbacks in seven major deals relating to the acquisition of sub-systems worth thousands of crores. Investigations into six of these deals commenced in 2007.

One of the cases pertains to the procurement of multi-beam echo sounders for the Indian Navy — which is likely to be forwarded to the CBI, sources said. The multi-beam echo sounder is designed to perform seabed mapping and seabed imagery to full ocean depth with an unsurpassed resolution, coverage and accuracy.

The ministry’s chief vigilance officer (CVO) is currently investigating four of the remaining six “dubious deals”. They include the procurement of ground-based mobile

India : Indian AF Faults Fighter Pact With Russia

Indian AF Faults Fighter Pact With Russia

Senior Indian Air Force officials say they are finding holes in the agreement their government signed Oct. 18 with Russia for joint production of a fifth-generation fighter aircraft.
The Air Force prefers to get involved in the project from the beginning of the design stage, but the Russians say the design of the proposed fifth-generation aircraft is frozen, Air Force sources said.
Being involved from the start would allow the Air Force to introduce its own requirements into the design process and to become familiar with the design of the aircraft they propose to fly, a senior service official said.
