Asia&pacific : Fuel needs limit China's combat ability

BY : Andrei Chang is editor-in-chief of Kanwa Defense Review Monthly

By calculating the amount of fuel oil required by the Chinese navy and air force in a large-scale attack across the Taiwan Strait under high-tech conditions, it becomes apparent that such an assault could not be sustained for an extended period.

For an attack on Taiwan, China would likely mobilize 10 fighter divisions of the PLA Air Force. In fact, only one to two regiments under each division are armed with third generation fighter aircraft. According to reliable sources, the total number of Su-27, J-11A and Su-30 fighters now stands at 281.

Each Su fighter can carry up to 9.4 tons of fuel, with a maximum combat radius of 1,500 kilometers. Since the Su series are mostly deployed at second-front airports,

India : Armed forces' modernisation took a knock during 2007

BY : Vishnu Makhijani For IANS

Despite ambitious plans and repeated assertions by officials, the much needed modernisation of the Indian armed forces took a knock in the year gone by, with cost and timeline escalations as also charges of corruption pushing back the process.

Not surprisingly, the 1.2 million strong Indian Army - the world's fourth largest - was the worst affected with its plans to induct 400 additional 155 mm field howitzers, at least 124 indigenous Arjun main battle tanks (MBTs) and 197 light helicopters going on the backburner.

The Indian Navy was on a slightly more even keel with 34 vessels of various types, including destroyers, frigates and submarines on order from Indian and foreign yards.

India : To protect Sukhoi secrets, IAF will switch off radars during exercise

BY : Manu Pubby For Indianexpress

India’s defence ties with the US may be reaching new heights, but the Air Force is keen to protect the secrets of its latest fighting machine, the Su 30MKI, from probing eyes during the high profile ‘Red Flag’ exercise scheduled to take place at the Nellis airbase in US in August next year.

The Air Force is sending six Su 30s for the prestigious exercise — the first time the latest fighter from the Russian stable will visit North America — but has decided to keep the aircraft’s classified NO11M BARS radar switched off during the entire war game.

While alternative arrangements are being made to ensure that the performance of the fighters at the “world’s toughest aerial combat training exercise” does not get
