India : Russian turbulence for Indian airbase

It does seem that India will have to downsize its big-power dreams in Central Asia. Its plan to deploy aircraft at the base at Ayni in Tajikistan is facing opposition from an unexpected quarter - Russia.

Ayni, located 10 kilometers from the Tajik capital Dushanbe, was used by the Soviets during the 1980s to support their military operations in Afghanistan. Following their withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Soviets left Ayni and the base fell into a dilapidated condition.

In 2002, India undertook renovation of the base under a bilateral defense agreement with the Tajiks. It spent over US$1.1 millionrenovating the base: extending and

Historical drone missile launched


The first-ever launch of an air to ground missile from a full scale aerial target drone was completed Jan. 9 by Detachment 1, 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron located at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.

The FSAT is an unmanned QF-4 Phantom Drone that was operated by remote control from a ground station, said Maj. John Markle, Det. 1, 82 ATRS operations officer.

N&S America : Boeing Plans Sixth Generation Fighter With Block 3 Super Hornet

Boeing is touting an even newer version of its F/A-18E/F Super Hornet that, paired with an advanced sixth-generation fighter in the works at the company, would give customers what Boeing deems a better package of capabilities than Lockheed Martin's combination of the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

The idea is that customers could buy 4.5 generation Super Hornets (perhaps 4.75 generation with the planned extra forward stealth and extra range of Block 3 aircraft) and then switch to a new, sixth generation faster than if they bought the fifth

Europe : MISSILE FALLS FROM RAF AIRCRAFT AND LANDS ON TARMAC

An investigation has been launched after a missile fell from an aircraft and landed on the tarmac at RAF Lossiemouth.

The Brimstone weapon was being loaded on to the Tornado GR4 when the incident happened at the Moray airbase on Tuesday.

The area surrounding the aircraft was immediately cordoned off before clearance was given to move the weapon.

India : MIG-27 crashes in North Bengal, pilot safe

In the first mishap of an IAF aircraft this year, a MIG-27 ground attack fighter crashed near Hashimara air base in North Bengal on Thursday but the pilot managed to eject out safely.

The aircraft got air borne at 12:30 PM for a routine training mission and crashed 10.2 kms east of the base at 12:40, an IAF spokesman said.

He said the pilot managed to eject safely seconds before the plane crashed into the ground.

India : DRDO: Rao panel to submit report in February

Even as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) celebrates its Golden Jubilee Year, the Rama Rao Committee that has been tasked by the Government to audit and recommend changes for the improvement of the organisation has begun its final deliberations. The independent and external eight-man Committee headed by P. Rama Rao, a former Secretary at the Science and Technology Department was reconvened in New Delhi for its final confabulations.

The committee will submit its findings and recommendations in February.

Indian indigenous dreams are revving up once again. After the success of the advanced light helicopter (ALH), the country has decided to design and produce its own light observation helicopter.

The decision to manufacture an indigenous light helicopter was taken after the Ministry of Defence shelved the deal with the Eurocopter, citing squiggles in formalities.

India : Nag missile to undergo final trial in summer: Saraswat

The army's third generation anti -tank guided missile project 'Nag' is nearing completion and it will undergo one more "user trial" before it is cleared for induction, a top defence scientist said on Tuesday.

"The army is happy with the Nag missile. The first phase of user trials were completed in November and December 2007 and the final trial of this project will take place this summer," DRDO Chief Controller Research and Development (Missile and Strategic systems) Dr V K Saraswat told reporters here.

'Nag' (cobra) is an all weather, top-attack, fire-and- forget anti-tank guided missile

After Russia back-pedalled on transferring technology for the production here of the T-90 main battle tank (MBT), a hiatus seems to have emerged over transferring "total" technology for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile that Russia is jointly developing with India.
