It does seem that India will have to downsize its big-power dreams in Central Asia. Its plan to deploy aircraft at the base at Ayni in Tajikistan is facing opposition from an unexpected quarter - Russia.
Ayni, located 10 kilometers from the Tajik capital Dushanbe, was used by the Soviets during the 1980s to support their military operations in Afghanistan. Following their withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Soviets left Ayni and the base fell into a dilapidated condition.

In the first mishap of an IAF aircraft this year, a MIG-27 ground attack fighter crashed near Hashimara air base in North Bengal on Thursday but the pilot managed to eject out safely.
The aircraft got air borne at 12:30 PM for a routine training mission and crashed 10.2 kms east of the base at 12:40, an IAF spokesman said.
He said the pilot managed to eject safely seconds before the plane crashed into the ground.
Even as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) celebrates its Golden Jubilee Year, the Rama Rao Committee that has been tasked by the Government to audit and recommend changes for the improvement of the organisation has begun its final deliberations. The independent and external eight-man Committee headed by P. Rama Rao, a former Secretary at the Science and Technology Department was reconvened in New Delhi for its final confabulations.
The committee will submit its findings and recommendations in February.
Indian indigenous dreams are revving up once again. After the success of the advanced light helicopter (ALH), the country has decided to design and produce its own light observation helicopter.

The army's third generation anti -tank guided missile project 'Nag' is nearing completion and it will undergo one more "user trial" before it is cleared for induction, a top defence scientist said on Tuesday.
"The army is happy with the Nag missile. The first phase of user trials were completed in November and December 2007 and the final trial of this project will take place this summer," DRDO Chief Controller Research and Development (Missile and Strategic systems) Dr V K Saraswat told reporters here.

After Russia back-pedalled on transferring technology for the production here of the T-90 main battle tank (MBT), a hiatus seems to have emerged over transferring "total" technology for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile that Russia is jointly developing with India.
