India : Global tenders for 317 IAF, Army copters soon

After the government scrapped the almost-finalised $1 billion Eurocopter deal to procure 197 helicopters for the Army, it's now gearing up to float a fresh global tender for acquiring 317 helicopters.

The defence ministry has clubbed the requirements of the Army (197) and IAF (120) in the tender for the 'light' helicopters to replace the ageing Cheetah and Chetak fleets, still being used for high-altitude operations.

Though defence minister A K Antony on Tuesday said the "combined tender" would be floated "soon", the entire process will take another three to four years. Four aviation companies Textron Corporation or Bell (US), Eurocopter (France, Germany and Spain), Augusta Westland (Italy) and Kamov (Russia) are likely to be in the race.
