India bans Su-30MKI fighters from using radars during 'Red Flag Nellis' exercise


India's defence ministry has confirmed that the six Sukhoi Su-30MKI multirole fighters that will participate in "Red Flag Nellis" manoeuvres at Nellis AFB, Nevada in August 2008 will operate without using their NIIP Bars radars.

"The radar frequencies are top secret, as they can be used to block vital functions of the fighter," says the Indian air force, which adds: "While we have a good equation with the USA, we have to be careful about the future." US interest in the system

India : India to train Malaysian Air Force pilots

The training in India of Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) pilots and the regional and global situation will feature high on the agenda during Defence Minister A.K. Antony's three-day trip to Malaysia from Sunday.

Antony's visit is seen as a reinforcement of New Delhi's Look East policy and an effort to counter China's influence in Southeast and East Asia.

Significantly, three of Antony's four visits abroad since assuming office 15 months ago have been to this region - Singapore (June 2007), Vietnam (December 2007) and now to Malaysia.

Asia&pacific : China's sudden show of force sent SDF jets scrambling

Aggressive military action by China's air force in the East China Sea triggered alarm in Japan that resulted in emergency scrambling by Self-Defense Forces fighter jets on two days in September.

Chinese bombers made more than 40 sorties in airspace around the disputed Chunxiao gas field, known as Shirakaba in Japanese. SDF jets were scrambled 12 times, according to Taiwanese military sources.

Japanese government sources later confirmed the account.

India : Lockheed to supply 18 F-16s to Pakistan

Lockheed Martin Corp LMT.N> was awarded a $498.2 million contract to supply F-16 aircraft to Pakistan, the Pentagon said on Monday, as Pakistani officials mulled whether to go ahead with a January 8 election after the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.

Lockheed will sell 12 F-16C plus 6 F-16D planes to Pakistan under the contract, the Pentagon said in its daily list of defense contract awards. The Defense Department, which oversees sales of military weapons to foreign governments, did not say how soon the fighter jets would be delivered.

India : India to double cruise missile output

The Russian-Indian joint venture BrahMos has purchased a manufacturing plant in south India.

BrahMos plans to use the new facility to turn out twice as many supersonic cruise missiles as before, a company spokesman said Monday, RIA Novosti reported.

The Indian state-owned company Kerala Hightech Industries Ltd. sold the facility to BrahMos, and the increased manufacturing capacity will allow the number of cruise missiles being produced to rise from 25 a year to 50 a year, the report said.

India : India training Cambodian soldiers in jungle warfare

Thirteen soldiers from the Royal Cambodian Special Force (RCSF) are currently undergoing an intensive four-week course at the Indian Army's Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School (CIJWS) at Vairengte in Mizoram, Asia's premier institute for imparting such skills.

'The RCSF is keen to learn from the Indian Army's experience in combating insurgency for the past 50 years. There is no better staging ground for this exchange of expertise that our facility at Vairengte,' an officer said.

The training will conclude by mid-January.
