BY : THE HINDU

The Indian Air Force’s recent decision to recruit male pilots under the short service commission (SSC) appears to have paid off.

All vacancies for male flight cadets under the SSC route at the Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal (close to Hyderabad) have been fully subscribed. Of the batch of 130 flight cadets undergoing training at the AFA, 20 are hoping to become pilots through the SSC route.

The 75-year-old Air Force, which already accepts female cadets under the SSC as lady officers, including for ground duties and as transport and helicopter pilots, has

India : Army, IAF to showcase firepower before foreign envoys

BY: PTI

In yet another break from the tradition of keeping military affairs under wraps, Army and Air Force will showcase strides made by them in conventional warfare in a major weeklong exercise in Rajasthan next month when foreign diplomats would be invited.

"This would be the biggest war games to be conducted by the armed forces since Operation Desert Strike in 2004-05", a defence ministry official said and, apparently keeping in view its close proximity to Pakistan, "Islamabad has been kept informed" about the event.

A hi-tech battle for the pie in the sky can, strange as it may seem, end up on the breakfast table. The planned purchase of fighter aircraft by the IAF is top of the list of high profile defence deals, which has international players pitted against each other for a slice of the action.

Now, two US defence majors, Lockheed Martin and Boeing are involved in the dogfight — and the former with its F-16 ‘Fighting Falcon’ and the latter’s F-18 are among the
