Asia&pacific : Russia to revamp military transport aircraft fleet

The Russian Air Force has outlined plans to modernize the country's ageing fleet of military transport aircraft, the Air Force's commander said on Tuesday.

According to various sources, there are up to 300 transport aircraft in service with the Russian Air Force, including An-12 Cub, An-72 Coaler, An-124 Condor and Il-76 Candid planes. Most of the aircraft entered service in the 1960s and 1970s and are considered unsafe by modern safety standards.

India : Electronic warfare system for Army nearing completion

The Indian Army’s electronic warfare (EW) capabilities in the rugged and exacting semi-desert and border areas is close to get a decisive edge soon.

India : India Seeks Acoustic Artillery Locating System

The Indian Army is on a global hunt to buy sound ranging systems (SRSs) to detect mortar and artillery fire along its borders with Pakistan and China.

India issued a request for proposal to the U.K.'s BAE Systems and Thales of France for an initial purchase of 34 SRSs for $120 million, said a senior official of the Indian Defence Ministry.The Army will use the systems to acoustically locate mortars of 80mm or larger, 100mm and bigger artillery, and tank fire in urban or mountain terrain.

India : No strategic partner for LCA: Antony

The government today ruled out the need for a strategic partner for its prestigious Light Combat Aircraft programme for which it has already invested over Rs 4,800 crore.
The indigenous programme has already completed around 829 flights and it is progressing as per scheduled, the defence minister, Mr A K Antony, told the Lok Sabha today. “Presently no need is felt for a strategic partner,” he added. The project is being monitored by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and Indian Air Force (IAF) to take collective decisions and coordination, he said.

India : Life support system under development for LCA pilots

The city-based Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL) says ILSS can generate oxygen to replenish its stock and ensure that the pilot is not deprived of the most essential component for a man's survival.

A DRDO lab is developing an Integrated Life Support System (ILSS) that would allow pilots flying India's light combat aircraft, Tejas, breathe easily during long haul flights at high altitudes.
