To ink contracts with Indian companies for the $10 billion IAF jet deal.

Saab Gripen, one of the six contenders in the $10-billion medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) deal, is looking to sign up Indian companies for components.

On the back of a flurry of deals signed by Boeing IDS and Lockheed Martin during the DefExpo 2008, Saab Gripen now wants to grab a slice of the pie. It plans to sign up Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) and the Tata Group for offsets for its Gripen fighter aircraft.

N&S America : RAF Eurofighter damaged in US landing incident

A Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon has been damaged during a wheels-up landing incident at the US Navy’s China Lake weapons test range in California, the UK service has confirmed.

Assigned to the RAF’s Coningsby-based 17 Sqn Operational Evaluation Unit, the aircraft sustained the damage when it landed at the end of what an RAF source describes as "routine trials work dropping laser-guided bombs." The pilot did not eject from the aircraft, which came to rest on the runway, and was not injured in the mishap, which took place on or around 25 April.

Asia&pacific : Exercise ‘Indus Viper’ concludes at PAF base Sargodha

The ten-day multi-dimensional exercise “Indus Viper” between Pakistan Air Force and Turkish Air Force concluded today at the PAF Base, Mushaf, Sargodha, with Air Marshal Shahid Lateef, Acting Chief of the Air Staff, PAF chief Guest on the occasion.

According to a media release received here Tuesday, Air Marshal Shahid Lateef in his address said that both the Air Forces have a long relationship with exchange postings, conducting courses and training visits.

“It is indeed a great honor for the PAF to have Turkish Air Force F-16s participate in our 50th anniversary celebrations in the year 1997. The exercise Indus Viper, which has just culminated successfully, is indeed an extension of the same cooperation”, he said.

After reports of “internal sabotage” could have been the possible cause of engine failures in recently carried out winter trials of Arjun Tanks made headlines, Indian Army has made a U-Turn on the indigenous Arjun main battle tank and has claimed that few minor snags were found with the gear box of the Arjuns and they were no Engine failures as reported earlier and even the main gun of Arjun MBT performed exceptionally well in the trials ,Senior Army official said that Army will go on and carry out the fourth round of AUCRT (accelerated usage-cum-reliability trials) of the Arjuns which will be held in the first week of May ,this sudden U-Turn

Army denies sabotage of Arjun trial


The Indian Army Monday refuted allegations of “sabotage” in the trials of the indigenously developed main battle tank (MBT) Arjun, saying that any speculation regarding this was “misconceived.”

“During the winter trials of the Arjun tank, the DRDO's (Defence Research and Development Organisation) involvement was complete and of the same extent as the user's (Indian Army).

India : Boeing to outsource F-18 components to India

US civil and defence aerospace major Boeing has decided to outsource two critical components of the F-18 Super Hornet combat aircraft to India and the order for one of them could go to the Tatas.

Lt Gen Jeffrey B. Kohler, Boeing vice president for international strategy, told the India Strategic defence magazine that as a “responsible world player in aerospace, Boeing wanted a long-term, trusted partnership with India and that the orders for these two components are being placed now irrespective of whether or not the company wins the tender for 126 Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA).”

India : India signs deal to upgrade 51 Mirage fighters

As part of steps to keep the country's air power capability at optimal level, India has signed a billion-Euro deal to upgrade its 51 Mirage Multi-Role Fighters.

Dassault, the French original equipment manufacturer, has agreed to upgrade the Indian Air Force's Mirage 2000 fleet, Defence Minister A K Antony told Lok Sabha today.

Antony said the Request For Proposal (RFP) had been issued to Dassault on April 9 after clearance of the Cabinet Committee on Security.
