India : Army Takes a U-Turn on Arjun tank

BY : Vinay For IDRW.ORG

After reports of “internal sabotage” could have been the possible cause of engine failures in recently carried out winter trials of Arjun Tanks made headlines, Indian Army has made a U-Turn on the indigenous Arjun main battle tank and has claimed that few minor snags were found with the gear box of the Arjuns and they were no Engine failures as reported earlier and even the main gun of Arjun MBT performed exceptionally well in the trials ,Senior Army official said that Army will go on and carry out the fourth round of AUCRT (accelerated usage-cum-reliability trials) of the Arjuns which will be held in the first week of May ,this sudden U-Turn seems to because minister of state for defense production Rao Inderjit Singh had said that independent committee will be formed to look into the matter and possibility on Internal sabotage was not ruled out by the minister him self , MTU 838 Ka 501 diesel engine which has been powering Arjuns for more then two decade now have already have been driven for more then 75,000 km and sudden reports of failures only in Trials prompted possibility of sabotage theory ,derivate of the same engine also powers German Leopard 2 MBT which has seen action in Gulf war and in recent conflicts like in Afghanistan where temperature soar past 50 degree Celsius ,It was earlier reported by Army that Engines over heated under desert conditions and even broke down in earlier Trials ,well now all eyes are on the reports which will submitted by army after fourth round of AUCRT is carried out
