Asia&pacific : Israel-China link

BY : The Washington Times

Defense intelligence officials said this week that China's new J-10 jet fighter was built with the help of Israel, under the U.S.-sponsored Lavi jet fighter program canceled back in 1987.

"China's J-10 program was assisted by engineers who worked on the Israeli Lavi program," one defense official told Inside the Ring. "The J-10 and Lavi share many of the same design elements."

According to the officials, Russia also has helped with the J-10 program, helping Beijing to develop a new J-10 engine to replace the current one — a Chinese copy of the CFM-56 jet engine developed jointly by General Electric and the French company Snecma.

The J-10 was under development in secret for years but its deployment was only acknowledged by Beijing in January 2007. It is considered a fourth-generation fighter-bomber comparable to the U.S. F-16.

The defense officials' comments followed a report in Jane's Defence Weekly stating that the J-10 is a close copy of the Lavi jet, and that Chinese developers had access to a Lavi prototype in Chengdu, where the J-10 was designed and built. Documents in Hebrew on the Israel Aircraft Industries jet also were observed by Russian engineers, the magazine stated.

The Lavi was developed with $1.8 billion in U.S. aid to Israel. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld in 2005 sharply restricted U.S. military technology sharing with Israel over concerns about Israeli-Chinese military cooperation.

The Israeli-Chinese J-10 cooperation involved "decades"-long exchanges between Russian, Israeli and Chinese aircraft developers, the magazine stated, quoting Russians involved in the program. The cooperation included extensive design and performance modeling, wind-tunnel testing and advanced aerodynamic design input.Richard Fisher, a specialist on China's military with the International Assessment and Strategy Center, said the J-10-Lavi cooperation "confirms the need for continued American vigilance to prevent military technology sales to China from Israel or any other ally."

"This is now a tragedy for the people of Israel and the United States, given the high chances that China will sell the J-10 to Iran," he said, adding that Israel should fully disclose the extent of military cooperation with China, "a country that aids the enemies of Israel, and threatens America and many of its allies."

An Israeli Embassy spokesman said he is checking the report. A Chinese Embassy spokesman could not be reached.

Chinese and Israeli officials in the past have denied any links between the J-10 and the Lavi.

The Israeli-Chinese link in military co-operation especially the development of J10 with active participation of Israel should be closely scrutinized and if the link still exists, then it does not forbode well for India as the Israelis are trusted with too many military projects such as the AWACS and Barak missile programmes.
The Chinese ability to retro-engineer sophisticated Israeli and Russian military jets shows that they are way ahead of India in aeronautical engineering, warships and nuclear as well as conventional submarines.
Whereas India wants 100% indegenous products even if it means reinventing the wheel and the Army and Airforce demanding only the very best foreign military hardware, the Chinese are moving forward to be the dominant power in Asia. The PLA is almost twice the size of the Indian Army and equipped with the latest and proven hardware. They are even conducting consistant cyber warfare on Indian Government websites along with the hacking into American and European defence websites. They do not care for anything or anybody. They are and have been China centric. These prove beyond any doubt that they are getting ready for future planned hostilities. Distruption of vital communication during war would be crucial to the outcome of any future warfare.
The very fact that they have built roads and other infrastructures along the common border and have also established listening posts to spy on India does not indicate friendly policies towards India. Their claim on Arunachel Pradesh and now on parts of Sikkim only shows their belligrance towards India. The Chinese also actively assist Pakistan and Bangladesh in their effort to subvert the Indian economy by terrorist activities.
How well prepared is India? Can India resist and repel any military adventure by the Chinese and their ally, Pakistan? How far would the US and other nations give a helping hand when the local communists (CPI) are doing everything to please the Chinese by their various anti-US demands. China would have taken possession of Taiwan if not for the US. Would the US assist India when the Indians are so anti-US?
If India does not wake up, it is going to lose Kashmir, AP and Assam within a decade. China is not going to wait until 2020 when India might be much stronger. Chinese military doctrine is based on overwhelming force on enemy whether big or small. They fight to win and are willing to initiate war when they are ready. What happened to Tibet should be a classic example of Chinese military strategy!

[b]The Indians too have a strategy. When there was firing across the LOC from Pakistan followed by infiltration, and now Pakistan says that there is a misunderstanding, the Indians are believing the Pakistanis. That is the Indian strategy. The enemy will throw dust into the Indian eyes and the Indian will believe the enemy.

They also have a no first use of Nuclear weapons policy. Can you imagine how ill informed the Indian armed forces are about such a policy. Even the USA, Russia, China and other countries does not have a no first use policy. It is as if India has the best firepower, and the best spying agencies etc that they can spy on the enemy and take so much measures to correct the situation should the enemy be thinking of attacking India. There are so many lapses in their intelligence gathering that they leave vital information and India gets bombed every now and then.

India needs to repeal the no first use law. Go on full force to develop their weapons and become well ahead of the Chinese. India needs to start asserting itself. The Indians need to realign themselves with the Americans and western nations and let Russia find for itself it they want to trust the Chinese or Indians?

At best India has no more value in the life of the Indian soldier, the Indian farmer and the patriotic Indian. The true Indian who is respected is the corrupt, the one who has money stashed away in the western countries. The rest are people who needs to be sucked dry.

it is unfortunate, just look at the way Mdm Pratibha Patil was chosen and Mr Abdul Kalam was denied another term. I know Mr. Abdul Kalam is a true Indian and would have served and had served the nation best
