India : Modified Kaveri Engine to Propel Indian Navy Ships

BY : PIB

The Gas Turbine Research Establishment, Bangalore of Defence Research and Development Organisation which has been indigenously developing Kaveri engine for propelling the Indian Light Combat Aircraft (Tejas), has now come up with a modified marine version, as a spin off during research, to develop shaft power for propelling Indian Naval ship.

Using the core of the Kaveri engine, the scientists of GTRE have added Low Pressure Compressor & Turbine as a gas generator and designed a Free Power Turbine to generate shaft Power for the maritime application. The Kaveri Marine Gas Turbine (KMGT) as it has been named has been transported to Naval Dock Yard,

India : Russia offers to sell state-of-the-art strike fighter

BY : THE HINDU

Russia is ready to export state-of-the-art Su-35 air superiority-cum-strike fighter to India, said officials of Rosoboronexport, the country’s sole arms exporting company.

The fourth generation plus (4 +) fighter is rated next to the fifth generation American F-22 Raptor, which, however, is not for export. Till now, the Russians were also not keen on selling the fighter.

Su-35 has larger wings and more powerful engines than the Sukhoi-30 MKI, which is in service with the Indian Air Force, with more fighters being added at one a month.

It also uses more advanced materials for the airframe and incorporates a new-generation radar which allows the pilot to detect and track up to 30 aerial

India : Finally, LCA planes to get adequate thrust

BY : AJAI SHUKLA

For years, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has argued bitterly with the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) which is developing India's Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) over who is to blame for the LCA's low engine power.

While the IAF accuses the ADA of failing to develop a suitable engine; the ADA retorts that the IAF's demands for extra combat punch added 2 tonnes to the LCA's original weight of 8 tonnes.

With the promised Kaveri engine nowhere in sight, the LCA makes do with the under-powered General Electric F-404 engine.

India : Patriot punch for Indian air defence

BY : HT

As India prepares to ward off threats from ballistic missiles, the US has offered to equip the Indian military with a combat-proven surface-to-air guided missile system designed to protect US troops from tactical ballistic and cruise missile strikes.

Acting in response to a request for proposal (RFP) floated by the Indian ministry of defence for medium range surface-to-air missiles, US defence contractor Raytheon made a sales pitch for the Patriot air defence system at the Farnborough international air show on Tuesday.

Patriot programme vice president Skip Garrett told HT that the officials of the US

India : Kargil's first Indian POW to fly mid-air refuellers

BY : PTI

Nine years since his capture and release, the first Indian prisoner of war (POW) in the Kargil conflict Kambampati Nachiketa is set to fly mid-air refuellers, a small consolation from being kept away from fighter aircraft owing to an injury caused by 'physical hardships' during captivity.

"I am being transferred to Air Force Station Agra next month. Now I'll be flying IL-78 air-to-air refuellers," Nachiketa, captured on May 27, 1999 after his MiG-27 suffered a flame-out while destroying enemy positions in the Batalik sub-sector, told PTI.

On that fateful day, Nachiketa, then a flight lieutenant, took off in a 'Hayena' formation led by Sqn Ldr A Mandhokot to bomb enemy positions with 80 mm canons

India : Indian carrierborne MiG handover inches closer

BY : Flight International

Anatoly Belov, designer general of the Russian MiG Aircraft Corporation, says the first MiG-29K and MiG-29KUB aircraft will soon be delivered to the Indian Navy, more than 12 months later than the original scheduled handover.

In January 2004, MiG won a contract to supply twelve single-seat MiG-29K aircraft and four MiG-29KUB trainers, as well as simulators and spare parts. Two of the aircraft were originally due to be delivered to the Indian Navy in June 2007 and six more in November 2007, with deliveries to be completed by 2009.

But the MiG-29KUB did not make its first flight until January 2007 and the MiG-29K did not take to the air until June 2007, so the first four deliveries were pushed back to May 2008 – a deadline that was missed.

BY :RIA Novosti

Russia's Irkut corporation, the manufacturer of the famed Sukhoi fighters, has 80 solid orders for Yak-130 combat trainers, the company director said on Monday during the Farnborough air show currently being held near London.

Russia's Sukhoi to produce Su-35 fighter up to 2020

Russia's leading aircraft maker Sukhoi plans to produce its new state-of-the-art Su-35 Flanker-E multirole fighter plane over a period of 10 years up to 2020, the company's general director said.

Deliveries of the new air superiority/strike fighter, billed as a "4++ generation using fifth-generation technology" aircraft, to foreign clients will start in 2011.

"I think we will continue producing Su-35s at least until 2020," Mikhail Pogosyan said in an interview with Expert, a Russian business publication. "According to our estimates, demand for this fighter is over 200 aircraft."
