Sarasota man buys, rebuilds MiG fighter jets

They're relics of the cold war era that a local aviation buff is re-building in his garage.

Doug Morgan is piecing together two MiG fighter jets.

A few years ago, he went to the former Czechoslavakia and bought the two MiG 23 fighter jets in Prague. He disassembled them and had them brought to the U.S. by boat.

Brand new, they're worth a lot of money, and they are very rare here in the west.

Morgan bought them as investments and hopes to sell them next year to a museum or to an air show.

Commercial flights go about 500 miles per hour, but MiG jets go three times that speed. Morgan says they could go from coast to coast in 90 minutes.

"They're the 10th fastest manned aircraft ever manufactured," he said.

Morgan says he's still tweaking the planes for next year's test flights. He says he's loved having these toys, but is looking forward to selling them for nearly a $1 million each.

"This is the most exotic or high-performance aircraft I've dealt with," Morgan says.
