A submarine being developed by Italy and Russia displaces 1,000 metric tons but could take a size cut to better suit market demand, an Italian official said here Oct. 23. Italian shipyard Fincantieri and Russia’s Rubin have been working on the S1000 submarine, equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP), since 2004. Fincantieri has previously stated the submarine would be 40 to 50 meters long with a top speed of 14 knots, a crew of 16, submersion depth of 250 meters and the ability to stay submerged for 10 days using an AIP system powered by fuel cells. But a Fincantieri official said that plans could now be overhauled to produce a smaller
Prince William will next year fulfil his lifelong ambition to learn to fly when he joins the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.William will be the first modern Royal to serve in all three branches of the military in preparation for his role as King when he will become the head of the armed forces.
In learning to fly he is following in well trodden royal footsteps. The Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, and the Duke of York all qualified as pilots with the RAF.
Clarence House has announced that William, 25, will start a four month secondment with the RAF in January.
William, a second lieutenant in the Household Cavalry Regiment since completing his training at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst last December, will then spend the summer with the Royal Navy. He will work on submarines, surface ships and with the Fleet Air Arm.
The first Tranche II EJ200 engine made its first flight from Caselle di Torino Airport (Italy) on September 14, 2007. The Tranche II standard EJ200 engine was installed in the Eurofighter IPA2 aircraft for flight testing purpose. In these days the first phase of flight tests was completed. During the test, the Eurofighter IPA2 aircraft carried out supersonic flight and handling manoeuvres. The EJ200 engine behaved perfectly during the tests and exceeded all expectations of in-flight verifications.
For flight test purposes, a Tranche II engine was installed in the right-hand bay of the IPA2 aircraft in combination with a Tranche I engine in the left bay. With these tests, the compatibility of a Tranche II engine in a Tranche I aircraft was demonstrated.
