India : New Brahmos variant successfully tested

A BrahMos supersonic cruise missile with a strike-range of 290 km was on Thursday successfully test-fired in a vertical launch configuration for the first time by the Indian Navy.

With this launch, BrahMos has become the world's first and only supersonic cruise missile capable of being launched from both vertical and inclined positions from naval platforms.

"BrahMos missile was successfully test fired in vertical-launch configuration from an Indian Navy ship in the Bay of Bengal on Thursday," Defence Ministry sources said in New Delhi .

India : IAF reactivates airbase near Delhi, deploys MIG-29s

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has deployed MiG-29 fighter aircraft at the Hindon airbase in Ghaziabad on the outskirts of Delhi following escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan.

The deployment of fighter aircraft at the Hindon airbase follows the heightened threat of an aerial attack on New Delhi.

MiG-29s have been deployed at Delhi's doorsteps after over a decade after the Hindon airbase on the outskirts of Delhi was reactivated for fighter flying for the first time since 1997.

India : LCA high-altitude trials at Leh successful: DRDO

India's indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) has achieved a major milestone when its prototype landed at Leh air base in the high-altitude Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.

"Tejas (LCA) programme reached a major milestone when the prototype vehicle PV-3 landed at Leh on December 13 this year at 1326 hours," Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officials said here on Tuesday.

India : Russia to supply 80 helicopters to India within three years

Russia today said that all the 80 'M-17' helicopters, contracted this month under a whopping $1.5bn dollar deal, would be delivered to
India within the next two to three years. Director of Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation Mikhail Dmitriyev said these new helicopters which would augment the ferrying capacity of the IAF considerably, would be supplied under the deal signed during President Dmitry Medvedev's maiden visit to New Delhi.

The value of the contract also includes the training of helicopter operating crew.

India : Russia likely to lease Shchuka-B class nuke subs to India

Russia could lease several Shchuka-B class nuclear attack submarines to India in coming years, a top official here said though the delivery of the first of the two nuke subs reportedly contracted by India is far behind schedule.
At the same time, the official had ruled out any plans by Moscow to strike similar deals with China.
“Yes, there is a real possibility of leasing for ten years several of our nuclear powered multi-role submarines of Project 971 of ‘Shchuka-B´class,” the Director of Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSVTS) Mikhail Dmitriyev was quoted as saying by ITAR-TASS.

India : Final trials of Nag missiles from next week

The final user trials of the land version of the third generation, anti-tank guided missile, Nag, will be held in Chandan Air Force range, near Jaisalmer, from December 22 to 30.

As many as seven Nag missiles, which have fire-and-forget and top-attack capabilities, will be fired during the trials to be conducted by the Army, according to Nag’s project director S.S. Mishra.

Mr. Mishra told The Hindu here the final trials will be conducted in two phases – next week’s winter trials will be followed by summer trials in June 2009, also by the Army. However, the induction process of the missile was expected to begin after the winter trials. The land version of the indigenously developed tactical system has been built for use by the Army’s mechanised infantry.

India : Foreign, Indian soldiers trained to combat urban terror at Mizoram

The recent terror attacks in Mumbai and Assam have brought into focus the need to train Indian security forces to combat urban terrorism, officials said.

Anti-terror experts at the Counter Insurgency & Jungle Warfare School (CIJWS) at Vairengte in Mizoram have already taken the lead in imparting specialised training to army, paramilitary, and police personnel, in tackling urban terrorism.

"The training schedule involves a rigorous drill on how to tackle urban terrorism and low intensity conflict, besides simulated anti-insurgency operations," a senior army official told IANS, on the condition of anonymity.

After the historic moon mission, India will redesign Russian space capsule Soyuz to send its astronauts on the country's maiden manned space mission.

India : IB to recruit IAF men to make up for manpower shortage

Faced with an "acute shortage" of manpower, India's premier domestic snooping agency, the Intelligence Bureau (IB), will for the first time recruit non-commissioned officers (NCOs) from the Indian Air Force to fill up the vacancies.

"We have an acute shortage of manpower and to overcome the problem, we are recruiting over 3,000 personnel in the junior ranks. For the first time, we will take them from the IAF also," Home Ministry sources told a news agency here.

Till now, the junior staff in the IB was drawn from the paramilitary and state police forces and other departments under the Home Ministry.
